“Come Home”

come homeSierra Vista, Arizona

Why do people leave the Church? In the U.S. only 30 percent of Americans who were raised Catholic are still practicing. 10 percent of all adults in America are ex-Catholics. Only 60 percent of Catholics believe in a personal God.

In the sixth chapter of John’s gospel, we see Jesus giving the Bread of Life discourse, and many of his astonished and shaken followers, when commanded to eat the flesh and blood of the Son of Man, “turned back and no longer followed him.” (Jn 6:66).

Although the “hard teachings” of Jesus can sometimes cause people to turn their backs on him, the more common scenario is that Catholics today simply….drift away. But they can always come home–the door is always open.

This report comes from evangelist Ed of the Sierra Vista, Arizona team:

“We went to evangelize in Bisbee, Arizona. It is a very unique city–a former copper mining town. Today it is filled with artists and restaurants and many unique shops.

We spoke with about fifteen people and six or seven were fallen away Catholics. We gave them Medals, Rosaries, and brochures and spoke to them about the grace of God how much He loves them.

One, Rick, was 75 years old and his wife Tonnie was sick at home. He was walking his dog “Tie.” We started talking about how sick his wife was, so we prayed for his wife to be healed. Then we spoke about the Eucharist–how it is the source and summit of the Christian life, and how grace comes into your heart and heals the hurt. He started to cry. He asked when Confession was and said he would go today.

Another was Anjelica–and she was a homeless girl who wanted to get back to church but did not know how. We gave her one of each of our brochures and a rosary and explained the power of the rosary. She thanked us profusely and said she would get to Confession today since she had not been to Mass in a couple years.

Two girls, we gave rosaries to also asked Robert and Ed many questions about the faith and they answered them all. We explained a few of the miracles of the rosary and miracles of the Eucharist and they asked for some of our CDs. We gave them four of them. They thanked us and said they would listen to them. It was a good day overall.”

Praised be Jesus Christ! Whether you are 17 or 75, whether you have flat out turned your back on Her or simply drifted away, you can always come back to the Church, the Ark of Christ. Where else will you go? Who else has the words of eternal life? Don’t wander in the wilderness anymore. Come home.
